Teaching

Introductory Biochemistry  - BCMB 3100

This course has been designed to facilitate learning of the topics of biochemistry and molecular biology. In one semester, students will work in groups on case studies, which have been chosen not only for the material but also to develop problem-solving skills and scientific reasoning. This course covers biochemical concepts and principles such as the chemical properties of the cellular environment, the thermodynamics and kinetics of biochemical reactions, metabolic pathways and how they are regulated, and the structure and function of biomolecules.

Advanced Genetics, Cell, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology - BCMB/CBIO/GENE 8214

This unified course for graduate students in the life sciences (biochemistry, cellular biology, genetics, as well other university departments and colleges) emphasizes the survey of knowledge, primary literature and contemporary experimental approaches, to provide a set of core skills necessary for graduate studies in the Life Sciences. This course is a part of an integrated sequence composed of BCMB/CBIO/GENE 8211, 8213 and 8214. The broad area covered in this course is cell biology with emphasis on the plasma membrane, lipid, membrane-bounded organelles, protein trafficking, glycosylation and mitochondria. Dr. Medlock is involved in several class session and covers mitochondrial structure, function, genomics, proteomics, dynamics, behavior and quality control.

Medical Biochemistry AU/UGA Medical Partnership - MEDI Phase 1 Athens

The large groups sessions taught at the Medical Partnership are parts of the larger curriculum broken into modules.  These modules are designed to provide an understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of human health and disease.  Modules include the Prologue, Musculoskeletal, Brain and Behavior, Renal/Cardiopulmonary and GI/Endocrine/Reproduction.  Dr. Medock is involved in teaching several case based large group sessions including Cell Structure and Protein Trafficking, Muscle Metabolism I & II, Nitrogen Metabolism, Liver Metabolism, Fatty Acid Metabolism & Storage, Glucose Homeostasis & Ketogenesis, Endocrine Pancreas and Newborn Screening for Inborn Errors of Metabolism.

In addition, Dr. Medlock serves as a facilitator of small group learning for two modules within Phase 1.  Dr. Medlock is also a facilitator for two groups of the Community and Population Health course at the Medical Partnership which is part of both Phase 1 and Phase 2.
